- THE CASUALTIES - En La Linea Del Frente (CD) (2005)
Product Description
On the Front Line En Espanol
Recorded at Fort Collins, Colorado's Blasting Room - the studio owned by Descendents/Black Flag legend Bill Stevenson (All, Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Lagwagon, MxPx, Season To Risk, Shades Apart, and the Suicide Machines) - On The Front Line is "much more well-thought-out," says Rick. "We took more time doing it, more time writing it and trying to get it the best we could get it."
Producer Stevenson also played a key role in helping the Casualties attain their personal best. "Bill has a lot of history and a lot of music behind him, and he knows what he's doing," Rick explains. "He kicked our asses and made us work hard, which was a good thing. Normally when we record, we go in, play it, it sounds good, and that's it - we're done. But Bill made us do it over and over and over again..."
The end result, however, is still pure, punishing, passionate punk rock, with all the requisite rough edges intact. "The sound is not polished, it's just tighter. It's the same kind of punk, just now it's a lot more well-written and together," Rick clarifies.
Another notable departure that reflects the Casualties' evolution is the fact that On The Front Line - so named because "we're on the front line of a new time, and we have to be conscious about what's happening" - is their "most blatantly political album" by far (note provocative song titles like "Criminal Class," "Media Control," "Leaders Of Today," and "Death Toll"). "I don't really want to say the band grew up, but in a way maybe that is the proper thing to say," Rick muses. "Initially we weren't politically oriented at all, but now the state of the world is so bad, its stuff we can't just get drunk and be blind to. We can't say we don't care, because we do care. We can't hang around doing nothing, being mindless like we used to be. We've got to stand up and pay attention to what's going on, and be a part of something."
